Care staff are the driving force of our healthcare system.

Here are 6 things you may not know about their job role…

1) Support staff play a vital role in ensuring that our healthcare sector is working efficiently

2) The term ‘support worker’ isn’t just explicit to clinically trained roles within hospitals – maintenance staff and catering staff are also considered part of the healthcare support staff

3) There are twice the number of people aged between 20-24 in support roles than in clinical roles (8% compared with 3%), largely due to clinical staff having to undergo long-term training

4) Support roles extend outside of the hospital environment to primary and secondary care settings too

5) Support workers make up almost 40% of the whole healthcare workforce in the UK!

6) Support workers will often have the ability to work outside of traditional silos with support workers being able demonstrates a portfolio of skills. For example, a health or a social care worker might be able to learn how to undertake basic nail care for patients
